LECTURE

-Introduction to Photoshop 3 / Adjustment Layer & Filters -

# Adjustment Layer

  1. Non-destructive image editing tool
  2. Adds color and tonal adjustments without altering original pixels
  3. Allows editing and discarding adjustments anytime
  4. Helps restore the original image when needed
  5. Enhances flexibility and efficiency in workflow
Basic Understanding of Adjustment Layer:
  1. Adding an adjustment layer creates a new layer above the image
  2. A specific 'Properties panel' appears for the chosen adjustment type
  3. The Properties panel allows modification of the adjustment layer
  4. Adjustments applied through this layer affect the image below it

- Brightness / Contrast -
  • Brightness Slider: Adjusts the highlights in the image
  • Contrast Slider: Adjusts the shadows in the image

- Level -

  • Adjusts 'tonal values' by modifying shadows, mid-tones, and highlights
  • Effective for 'image correction' with minimal adjustments

- Curves -

  • Allows adjustment of multiple points across the entire tonal range
  • Offers precise control over tone editing

- Exposure -

  • Exposure: Modifies highlights
  • Offset: Adjusts mid-tones
  • Gamma: Alters dark tones

- Selective Color -

  • Modifies specific primary colors (red, green, blue) in the image
  • Changes the amount of a selected color without affecting other primary colors
  • Useful for 'precise color control' in an image

# Filters

  1. Change colors
  2. Add blur effects
  3. Create new image effects
  4. Offers a virtually unlimited variety of filters for creative enhancement

# Tips for using Photoshop

  • when the 'preserve luminosity' is ON (won't affect the brightness)
  • 'copy' photo filter layer, change to 'multiply' (add more details)

PRACTICAL & TUTORIAL

Working Process

The best composition - week3

Figure 4.01 - best composition

Through completing the Week 3 exercise, I've gained practical skills in using essential Photoshop tools like the lasso and polygonal lasso tools. These tools are particularly useful for isolating specific parts of an image or removing backgrounds with greater control. Furthermore, with the masking tool, by transforming selections within different images, I can create more elements with unique visuals. Additionally, I have improved my skill of layering and arrangement, and I have a better understanding of how to create more dynamic and visually compelling designs with thoughtful elements to guide the viewer’s eye.

After filters

Figure 4.02 - Composition with filters

Through the process of editing and adding filters to my artwork, I have explored how adjusting hue, saturation, and lightness can significantly affect the mood and tone of an image. Also, I have learned how to work with curves, which is a powerful tool for adjusting the tonal range and contrast of an image. By editing specific points along the curve, I can control the brightness and darkness of various parts of the image. For example, dragging a point upward will brighten the image by lifting the highlights, while dragging it downward will darken it by deepening the shadows.

- Working Steps -
  1. Lower the saturation and the hue for the building, background, and floor. Which creates a greyish, black, and white tone.
  2. Increase the saturation and the hue for the red elements to make the color more bold.
  3. Adding and dragging upward the point on the curve increases the contrast between the red element and the neutral color elements.
